Friday December 21 we left Agrigento and to see the 3rd century Roman villa at Casale. The drive was really pleasant, with more gorgeous rolling hills.
Unfortunately, the villa was undergoing renovations (perhaps it always is?), so there were a lot of mosaics under sandbags and tarps. But the mosaics were really impressive. A few dozen rooms, and the floors of every single one were completely covered in mosaics of tiny tiles depicting chariot races, hunting scenes, fishing scenes, geometric patterns, wildlife and mythology.
Wow, they grew pigeons really big in ye olden days!
Narrow walkways are set up for visitors so that they don't walk over the mosaics or get in the way of the workers. The stroller was too wide to fit on them, so we ended up carrying Aldus around.
We got into Syracuse in the late afternoon and stayed in a really neat place - the Residence Alla Giudecca - in the former Jewish quarter on Ortygia. Photos of the room didn't really turn out, but this is the view from our rbalcony and the interior courtyard near reception:
