As per usual, Thanksgiving is here sooner than expected. Well, it's not here, but it's there sooner than I expected.
Thanksgiving happens to be one of my favorite holidays for a variety of reasons, some of which are probably good fodder for a completely separate blog post. Even though the Dutch don't celebrate Thanksgiving (duh), I've been practically giddy with anticipation of spending the weekend with friends from Ann Arbor in London. Yay! I have been perfectly willing to forgo the traditional turkey, stuffing, mashies and pumpkin pie in favor of tagging along with Michelle & Ali to their favorite London restaurants, preferably South Asian ones.
And then I also received this email from an American coworker:
Hi Charles and Kristine,
I don't know if you folks have plans on Wednesday evening, but if not we're going to have a little Thanksgiving dinner in the Guest House.
Sera is coming up from Amsterdam and Michiel has even ordered us a turkey. I can't promise to cook it as well as my Grandmother, but I'll give it my best shot.It will just be a few of us (5 or 6 at the moment), but you're more than welcome to join if you're feeling homesick. :)
Cheers,
Michael
Woo hoo! Thanksgiving dinner after all! I quickly volunteered to bring my usual cranberry-pear chutney (although it turns out they've got the cranberries covered already), cornbread muffins (thanks again for the Jiffy mix, Merrill & Amanda!) and mashed potatoes. Unfortunately, Charles is in Helsinki this week so he won't be able to join us. And since we're leaving the next day for London, I won't be bringing home any leftovers to share. But boy oh boy, turkey dinner!
This also means that there is somewhere to get a turkey here, and in December we might have ourselves a traditional Yunquist Christmas dinner after all!
because I had hotel appetizer- pan- fried- pastry- pasty- nastee- cheeze- meat- like- appetizer- style- awful- nastee- is- it- really- a- bread- product- or- a- piece- of- cardboard for dinner.
and, even though i'm in what seems to be a cool city, it was pitch dark at 6pm and raining.
blargh. would rather have it be ptich dark, raining and at home with a big plate of turkey. and mashies. and stuffing. and i'd even have a piece of pie.
and then watch the game... which isn't on TV at home, but i'd watch something. Maybe the Ashes...
