Without kimchi, no taste! (This was the headline for a feature article in de Volkskrant the other day. They're running a series on world kitchens and just happened to have one on South Korean food.)
Charles and I went to Utrecht last Thursday. He had a meeting, and I tagged along to do some shopping.
Afterward we made a sidetrip to Uithoorn and Amstelveen in search of a Korean grocer. The first shop on our list was a bust; we think the address listed was probably the home of the store owner. But we found a place in Amstelveen and stocked up on rice, red pepper paste, sesame seed oil, soy sauce, kim, kimchi, ramen and other goodies. We also bought a rice cooker. We bought so much stuff, the guy started handing us free energy drinks.
No chopsticks yet, but if this Public Outreach thing doesn't work out, I at least have the first staples for my new business venture: "Kristine's Kimbap Palace." I think it'll be the first in Diever!
i love that phrase. i even retitled my journal to "Zonder kimchi geen smaak!". It's so true.
glad you and charles seem to be making good with the townspeople (but why do i get the picture in my head of a maddened dutch mob wielding torches?).
anyway, watch out for the north koreans and i'm glad you found a local source for kimchi.
i think the kimbap place is a great idea. you'd probably make loads of cash.
